A First

A new year. Another milestone. My first ever blog post. This is the very start of my Visual Inventory, something I have been kicking around in my mind since FOREVER. Read about what this ‘Visual Inventory’ is all about here.
These images are related by place, but wholly unrelated in time and even concept. They are united only by being related to 1.
1 year ago, I took a photo of this tree, freshly cut down, right to the ground. The circle framed within a square caught my eye, so did the continuing echo of reducing circles within circles down to the core of the tree.
It is hard to disconnect the feelings of discomfort associated with the tree being cut down from the pleasure of the image. It’s hard to disconnect the place where I walk each day where this tree once was from the memory of the shade it used to provide.
I can imagine one day using this as a study for shapes. Maybe not ‘one’ day, maybe today.
Plain black and white. A No.1, stark, on freshly painted white. A little skewwhiff. A little jaunty. An unlikely place, and the photo cropped close gives only a hint of its original location, though the echo of the brickwork in the background recalls the textured brickwork in the first image. A reminder that if you keep your eyes open, interesting things are everywhere.
A reflection on 1. First post. One year ago. Number one. Tenuous? Maybe, but setting the scene for number 2 and beyond.
